Are you interested in how you might share your research across the network? You will then be interested in what the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) are able to provide for you. ANDS provide a number of tools, that any researcher with an Australian Access Federation (AAF) identity is able to register research data. For most institutions the regular network login will work or apply for an identity in the ARCS IdP.
The main steps required are as follows:
STEP 1: Search metadata to ensure the metadata you want to add does not already exist via the ANDS Find Data link.
STEP 2: Determine where your data is to be stored:
a. Not able to be made available publicly online (including written materials etc) then you will need to goto the Create Identifier page on ANDS and select Property Type "Description" from the drop down box, and then provide a description in the Property Value field.
b. Publicly available online then you will need to goto the Create Idenifier page on ANDS and select Property Type "URL" from the drop down box, and then provide the URL in the Property Value field. NOTE: If you ever move the data to a new URL, you must come back and change the URL here.
c. If it can be made available online but is not online, then you can register with ARCS Data Fabric service offerred by Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS). Data Fabric storage allows researchers and/or research groups to have a free 25GB. This storage can be mounted as a drive on your desktop. You can also use the QuickShare facility on Data Fabric to provide you with a URL to link to your resource.
The reason for this system is to enable you to publish a link to your collection and move it later on without the link to your collection breaking. Follow through the instructions provided.
STEP 3: Add metadata via the ANDS Publish Data link.
Select the Login method from the dropdown list. Normally you would use the AAF method.
Once you enter your login you maybe asked to enter it for a second time on a different screen.
STEP 4: Click the link Publish A Collection. After agreeing to the terms and conditions you will be presented with 10 fields to be filled out. Only 4 of which are manditory. Obviously the more information you can provide the easier it is to be found.
This is one of two methods available for registering your data. The second requires a more detailed approach to structuring the metadata of your collection.
